The birth of Airbnb gave birth to the travel startup. The possibility of marketing any type of accommodation – a house, a motorhome, an igloo! – allowed anyone enterprising enough to take on the role of host access to a growing base of trusted guests who flocked to the platform for something beyond the average hotel room. Of course, the big brands have noticed Airbnb’s meteoric rise. Booking and Expedia were forced to adjust their platforms and their approach. VRBO woke up from its amazement. Hotel brands have started the two-sided approach of fighting the legality of rental properties in courts and media in major cities while trying to join the party through boardroom acquisitions. .

One brand, HOLT, is committed to making a lasting name for itself, staying at the forefront of innovation while relying on good old-fashioned hospitality to meet the demands of a burgeoning class of modern travelers. . “We want to be the Marriott of our generation,” exclaims Benjamin Earley, CEO of HOLT. “Not only will HOLT be synonymous with travel and accommodation, but the real light at the end of the tunnel is the potential disruption of the essential way the average person thinks about accommodation. What happens to be the biggest market in the world.

The pandemic hasn’t been kind to the average Airbnb host. Travel stalled in 2020. As if the shock weren’t quick enough of a total shutdown of reservations, tickets and entertainment, booking platforms and credit cards initially sided with travelers to reimburse those affected by the closures, leaving accommodation businesses ranging from vacation rentals, travel agencies, tours and experiences, holding the bag. This bag was rent owed, employees owed, and assembly bills. “The pandemic has rocked a lot of small and medium-sized guests in the rental space. And not just the hosts. If you had a tangential or people-friendly business coming to your area to stay in rental houses and apartments, you were also struggling in 2020. But in the long run I think that will form a stronger class of hosts. and rental companies, ”Mr. Earley said hopefully.

HOLT intends to be one of those brands. A real estate developer and international rental company, HOLT is present in three countries. Initially renting and developing their properties, they have gradually improved their process since 2013. In 2018, they started taking long-term commercial type leases on houses and residential buildings, and renovating them partially or entirely in the single. purpose of short-term rental housing. “For years we have tried to squeeze a square peg into a round hole – placing guests in places that are meant to be permanently inhabited. But to travel is to go to a new and different place, and to make the house a vessel for your trip, whether it is a business trip or a pleasure trip, long or short.

In Bucharest, Romania, where HOLT owns and rents its properties, they added two large apartments and a contactless hotel-style building to their portfolio during the pandemic. Originally intended to be offices, HOLT approached the owners of a historic building in the Old Town and came up with the idea of converting it into nine modular suites.

In Oaxaca, Mexico, they completely renovated a four-story villa. In San Miguel de Allende, also in Mexico, they completed work on a house that faces the famous Parque Juarez, in the heart of the city. All achieved during the slowdown starting in 2020.

Seeking to differentiate itself from the average Airbnb host, HOLT is thinking big. “We prefer to accommodate groups. We are always looking for bigger homes in cool areas. We can do the job to make it amazing, just give us the keys in a good location. They also go for the look. They work with local designers to bring out the local cultural charm, while importing high quality products to distinguish their homes. HOLT aims for the top of the market in terms of the price and quality of their homes.

“Anyone can post a room online. It takes real magic to bring an entire house to life. With any luck with the viruses and the courage gained by surviving the pandemic, HOLT is well on your way to becoming your friendly host in the future.

Each adult in NSW will receive another cash voucher, but this time to spend on vacation accommodation.

Residents of NSW will receive a $ 50 voucher to spend on accommodation as the government attempts to get the state’s tourism industry back on track.

Prime Minister Dominic Perrottet said the Stay and Rediscover vouchers would work like the Dine and Discover program, except the vouchers can only be spent on accommodation, including hotels, trailer parks and camping grounds. camping.

“We have some of the best tourism opportunities, the best hotels in the world, and you want people to come out to support the companies that have put in the effort,” he said.

“The tourism and accommodation industry has been through a very difficult 12-18 month period (but)… there is a long way to go.

“We need to make the investments here in our state, it’s going to boost our economy as we go through this pandemic. “

The move is part of a major tourism stimulus package worth more than $ 500 million.

The program is currently being piloted and will launch statewide in March and all adults are eligible for the voucher.

Unrestricted travel between Greater Sydney and the regions may resume on November 1.

This follows an announcement made last week when Mr Perrottet said adults in NSW will also get two more $ 25 Dine and Discover vouchers in time for the summer vacation.

Mr Perrottet also revealed that the government will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to rekindle events and help get commercial airlines to resume flights to Sydney.

“We are also making a very strong statement to global airlines that we want you to come back to Sydney,” said Treasurer Matt Kean.

“We are going to be aggressively in the market making sure that the airlines that have sent routes to other cities come back to Sydney when we reopen as a nation.”

There are growing calls for empty student housing in New South Wales to be used to ease pressures on social housing in the state.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many rooms that would normally be used by students from outside Sydney are empty.

When you add that to all the hotel, motel, guesthouse, and second home rooms that are also vacant, then you have a lot of options to help those at risk of becoming homeless.

A report released earlier this year pointed out how “the precariousness of the workforce, rates of youth unemployment and underemployment, and inadequate rates of income support” can “provide a detrimental mix and expose the youth at greatest risk of homelessness ”when combined with“ the cost of rents and declining affordable rental housing ”.

Canterbury-Bankstown Council and the Inner West Council have made representations to the New South Wales Parliamentary Social Housing Inquiry on how they could temporarily open these empty rooms to people who might soon no longer have a roof over their heads.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, more than 50,000 people are currently waiting for social housing in New South Wales.

It can take some people up to a decade before they finally have a place to live.

The state government admits that the social housing system needs to improve so people don’t have to wait that long to find a safe place to stay.

In his own investigation, he noted: “There are particular affordability issues in the New South Wales region, exacerbated by the movement of COVID-related people out of Sydney to the regions.”

There has been an almost 30 percent increase in the number of priority applicant households listed in the register over the past two years.

As the government tries to find ways to get more social housing, many charities and organizations are trying to help people who are at risk of becoming homeless.

White Lion Youth is one of them and they have many programs aimed at reducing the social isolation of young people and the unemployment of at-risk youth.

They are about to launch their No Home Address campaign, which hopes to raise $ 250,000 to support the national rollout of Breakthrough Mentoring.

It is White Lion’s flagship service that connects at-risk youth with community volunteers. They will embark on an 18-week program that will prepare them as much as possible for a job.

If White Lion can reach his goal of $ 250,000, then he will be able to help 60 youth and 60 trained mentors.

All donations will be doubled between October 11-15, so dig deep and it will pay off massively for those in need. Donate here.

A 338 bed student housing program is under development in York.

Plans have been submitted for the James Street project, led by town developer S Harrison.

Close to York University and York St John University, an industrial unit, occupied by Alton Cars, would be replaced by a 308-unit cluster apartment complex, comprising communal kitchens, living spaces and catering, as well as 30 studios.

Designed by CSP Architects, also of York, a large central common area is part of the plan, with study space, games room, cinema and laundry room, with two landscaped courtyards.

Gavin Douglas, Head of Design at S Harrison, said: “The submission of this planning request follows an unobjectionable public consultation and comes at a time when demand for student housing is significantly outstripping the budget. offer.

“This summer, numerous reports indicate that York is running out of student housing and there is no doubt that specially designed student housing programs can alleviate the problem, while freeing up existing housing stock for local families.

“We specifically designed this development to sit comfortably in the predominantly residential environment at this end of James Street. The new building is much better suited to the local streetscape and existing neighbors than the current industrial unit and will significantly improve the view from the adjacent conservation area along Lawrence Street.

The app follows S Harrison’s transformation of the neighboring former Working Men’s Club and Tam O’Shanter pub on Lawrence Street into a 115-room premium student accommodation program in 2017.

S Harrison recently delivered several other student housing projects in York, including St John Central, Abode on Navigation Road and Percys Place, in York’s Walmgate Conservation Area.

It was also behind the City of York City Council headquarters and the adjacent Hampton by Hilton hotel, and Lidl, also on James Street.

The Richmond Hotel on Croft Road in Torbay will also house other people in need

Author: Helen DownPosted on September 2, 2021

Key workers and those in need of temporary accommodation will be accommodated in a Torbay hotel for six months to provide a “breaker” to the bay’s housing crisis.

The council has agreed to rent the 47 rooms at the Richmond Hotel on Croft Road in Torquay for six months starting September 14. Thirty-two rooms will then be rented to families in need of temporary accommodation and 15 to key workers.

The cost of the short-term contract is estimated to be around £ 450,000, an average of £ 52 per room per night. City staff will visit the hotel daily to assist those staying there.

The move, made by the Torbay City Council cabinet yesterday (September 1), is described as a ‘circuit breaker’ that will help alleviate what the council sees as a serious housing shortage. The council is currently trying to help 125 households in need of temporary housing, of which about a third are families with children. Many key workers, including NHS staff entering the bay, are also struggling to find accommodation.

The board of Lib Dem / Independent Controlled argues that the lack of public housing in Torbay, an increase in vacation rentals and rent increases make such a program necessary. He hopes the Richmond Hotel rental will give him some breathing space as he tries to find longer term accommodation across the bay.

Council chief Steve Darling (Liberal Democrats, Barton with Watcombe) said: “Torbay finds itself in an extremely difficult situation in terms of housing, with all segments of society having difficulty finding accommodation. Many families in temporary accommodation have to be relocated every two days or worse yet, be uprooted and moved to temporary accommodation outside the area as far as London and Bath.

“This temporary solution with the Richmond Hotel will help us protect the mental health and well-being of our families, while providing some stability and continuity in terms of education and employment.

Tara Harris, deputy director of community and client services, told the cabinet that the scale of the housing crisis and an expected increase in homelessness due to the “ripple effects” of the pandemic mean that the hotel itself would not be enough to provide permanent improvement to Bay’s housing crisis, but would provide much needed relief.

She said: “I don’t think anything is going to change, but it will give us a holding position while we can bring in more housing in April.”

“Access to social housing is not really a reality for the majority of people at the moment. We are still very much focused on the private rental sector due to the lack of housing.

It is believed that there are over 1,400 households waiting for affordable housing in the Bay, with demand quickly outstripping any new supply.

Speaking to cabinet, Councilor Chris Lewis (Tory, Preston) said the Tory opposition was “in principle” in favor of renting the hotel but had security concerns. He noted that hotel staff, touted by council as being in the hotel to provide 24/7 support, would not be adequately trained to deal with “problem people”. ‘they introduced themselves. He also wanted to make sure that there would be no single men placed in the hotel.

Ms Harris said she did not expect a need for additional security “due to the nature of the customer base” – families and key workers – but said it could be introduced if necessary. She added that there would be no single men in temporary accommodation in the hotel.

The Richmond Hotel will now apply for a planning permission for a temporary change of use for six months.

Last month, the council leadership divided the opinion of its coalition when it said it would not directly provide housing for Afghan refugees due to the housing shortage in the bay. He subsequently launched a campaign trying to encourage landlords to provide housing, but still says he will not provide social housing to refugees fleeing the Taliban.

Most of us don’t mind being surrounded by pollution, noise, and all the other nasty things that happen in the urban jungle. Yet we also welcome any destination that takes you to the countryside or the great outdoors seems like a wonderful idea. Luxury resorts and hotels could soon offer accommodation with a natural atmosphere thanks to the Casa Ojalá hut.

This unique structure is perfect for people who want to disconnect and relax in a breathtaking location. Don’t be fooled by the minimalist presentation as it has everything to make your stay pleasant and memorable. The creatures’ comfort is intact with the help of modular magic.

The credit goes to the Italian architect Beatrice Bonzanigo for the design of the Casa Ojalá hut. Years after its debut at Milan Design Week 2019, a working model now stands in the hills above the Cappana vineyard. Also, for those who are wondering, you can travel to Tuscany, Italy to see it.

In partnership with Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, they promote a new kind of experience. The one that involves scenic backdrops, fresh air, a backdrop of stars at night, and so much more. Guests have full control over their privacy thanks to the roll-up walls.

Wood, fabrics and stainless steel are the material of choice here. This allows the cabin to blend naturally into its background of trees, fields and the like. Casa Ojalá has been designed to maximize the limited space inside. The beds are under the mahogany floor of the raised structure.

Climb the ladder to access the rooftop terrace and admire the view. The Casa Ojalá cabin is fully customizable. Photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting and other sustainable features allow it to be installed somewhere off-grid. We want to see more concepts like these in the future.

The President of the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Hoteliers (HHF), Grigoris Tassios said that “the strategy for Covid-free islands has not been achieved, as the vaccination affected the permanent residents of the island, while it was It turned out that the mechanisms were not in place to control the tourists who arrived on the island.

Greece’s recent decision to “shut down” Mykonos after a spike in coronavirus cases on the island caused serious disturbances to the country’s tourism industry. The government is rushing to allay concerns about the sector and prevent uncertainty from spreading to other islands, with rumors that restrictive measures imposed on Mykonos will be lifted on Monday. Yet in just a few days the damage was done.

The first impact of the restrictive measures imposed on the most popular Greek destination is seen in the drop in short-term real estate rentals observed after the government announcements:

  • The occupancy rate of the accommodation offered on short-term rental platforms over the period leading up to the end of July was very high, exceeding 95 to 97%, before the announcement of the measures in Mykonos.
  • At the start of the week, however, that is to say only 24 hours after the announcement of the measures, their occupancy rate had fallen to around 80%.

The situation regarding cancellations in hotels is less clear, but with his statements to Business Daily, the president of the Pan-Hellenic Hoteliers Federation (HHF), Grigoris Tassios, expressed concern about developments. He noted that “the myth of the Covid Free islands collapsed, when on the country’s most touristic island, Mykonos, restrictive measures were imposed leading to hotel cancellations, pushing the government to restore the island to normal as soon as possible. Monday.” He added that “the strategy for the Covid-free islands was not achieved, as the vaccination concerned the permanent residents of the island, while it turned out that no mechanism was in place to control tourists who arrived on the island. Greece should not have been split in two and the result is what we are now seeing in Mykonos “.

In addition, in a letter to Minister of Tourism, Haris Theocharis, HHF points out that the largest percentage of quarantine rooms in hotels is already being used by tourists who have stayed in short-term rented accommodation. Quarantine hotels, HHF notes, are not hospitals and their owners have no intention of turning them into such. The group is asking tourists who have chosen to stay in short-term rental accommodation and who are Covid-19 positive to isolate themselves in the space they have rented.

For his part, the tourism minister told parliament that data from hoteliers and businesses on the popular island does not support reports of massive cancellations due to the new strict restrictive measures. “There are no cancellations in Mykonos. Cancellations exist only in the minds of those who write about them. I spoke with the hoteliers and they assured me that there were no cancellations “, underlined Theocharis. However, the figures for short-term rental platforms for the peak tourist season remain encouraging, as “most tourists mainly choose single-family homes which offer privacy in order to avoid coming into contact with a lot of people”, like the president of E-Real Estates, Themistoklis Bakas, said. In particular, occupancy rates based on pre-bookings for the period August 13-18 even reach 100% on many island destinations.
